Polar Plunge

Brrr...I am jumping into the icy waters of Lake Lanier Saturday, February 20th. No, I’m not crazy - I’m raising money for the Special Olympics of Georgia and I need your help!   Each year the Johns Creek Police Department (JCPD) participates with groups all over the US in the Polar Plunge which is the largest fundraising effort for the Special Olympics. It is presented by the Law Enforcement Torch Run of Georgia. Since I volunteer with JCPD in the Citizen Auxiliary Police Services (CAPS), I am participating in the 2016 Polar Plunge to raise money for the Special … [Read more...]

Awesome Memorial Day Hike on Vickery Creek Trail with Liz

Liz and I decided we would spend memorial day hiking a trail for fun and exercise. Rather than our typical jaunt up to the north Georgia mountains, we decided to try a smaller but beautiful trail only a few miles away in Roswell, GA. This was a fitting hike for Memorial Day as the trail and Vickery (Big) Creek are home to a spillway dam that was a valuable asset to the South during the Civil War, having powered the mill wheel that was built downstream at the now abandoned mill ruins. These mills were leading manufacturers of materials used for the Confederacy. The warm day provided … [Read more...]

Hike to Panther Creek Falls

Liz chose to spend her birthday hiking and so after some research, we chose to hike to Panther Creek Falls. The falls are located in Habersham County, GA and the trail follows the creek in for over 5 miles. We parked at the Panther Creek Recreation area lot just off of Old Historic Hwy 441 and from there it was about 3.7 miles to the falls heading south east from the parking area. The trail takes you under the 441 overpass and follows the creek into a beautiful and quiet area of the forest. The scenery changes significantly along the entire hike so you are treated to new surprises. … [Read more...]

Bike Riding over the July Fourth Holiday for Fun and Exercise

Liz and I enjoyed this year’s July 4th holiday by riding our bicycles across a couple of Atlanta’s best outdoor trails. Even amid very hot and humid weather, the majority of our ride was under a canopy of thick trees providing a beautiful and very comfortable place to enjoy the outdoors. Our rides were only a couple of hours each but provided excellent aerobic exercise. We were among many others who were walking, jogging, skating and riding these beautiful trails. Alpharetta’s Big Creek Greenway On Friday,  we rode the entire length of the Alpharetta Big Creek Greenway starting at new … [Read more...]

Snow Day 2011–Johns Creek, GA

Those of us in the deep South may not know how to drive in snowy, icy conditions but we do know how to enjoy a really good Snow Day!. Our street probably looked like many other streets across the North Georgia as the winter storm brought a nice, white blanket of snow. Our area received  somewhere between 5 and 7 inches. Since we live on a cul-de-sac at the bottom of a short but steep hill, the conditions are ripe for a day of winter sports. Our neighbors across the street began the winter Olympic competition by setting up a snow ramp at the end of their steep driveway. Can you say … [Read more...]

Visiting Lauren and Maddie in Ashville, NC

My daughter who lives in Ashville, NC recently became the proud owner of a new dog named Maddie. Maddie was purchased as a small puppy but is now 40 pounds and still growing. Since we were due for visit, we drove up to visit her, meet Maddie and to take them both for a hike. Liz researched the area and found many hiking trails that welcomed dogs. Hiking Little River - Triple Falls and High Falls Our choice was a trail on Little River that offered several water falls and lakes. This trail located in the Dupont State Forest about 45 minutes south of Ashville near Cedar Mountain and the … [Read more...]

Rafting the Chattooga River – Section IV

My wife Liz asked for one thing for her birthday this year…a rafting trip on the Chattooga River, Section IV with her family. We have rafted other, nearby rivers including the tame Nantahala and the more challenging Ocoee in the past. But the Chattooga River Section IV is where the movie Deliverance was filmed in 1972, a thriller film starring Jon Voight, Burt Reynolds, Ronny Cox, and Ned Beatty. The movie provided a new level of popularity for the river and especially for thrill-seeking whitewater rafters. Around this time, the river was restricted to commercial development and only three … [Read more...]

Christmas at Marco Island Florida

Christmas was early us this year as we worked around the best schedule for both Lauren and Matt to be there at the same time. It was a wonderful time and I wish it could have lasted longer. Lauren was able to visit for a few days before returning home to Memphis. She is in your last semester at school and so ready to get it over with. She has been looking at several prospective cities to call home when she start her new life as a working girl. Below is photo of the two of them. Since our family Christmas events all occurred before Christmas due to scheduling and Atlanta was headed for chilling … [Read more...]
